Pattani inquest rules army killed 4 unarmed men | Bangkok Post: news

BANGKOK - An inquest has ruled that security forces gunned down four unarmed Muslim men in a high-profile case in the deep South, a lawyer said Wednesday. Security officers said the men opened fire at them first. Those responsible for the killings never have been identified officially beyond being members of "security forces". Since January, 2004, when Muslim separatists restarted their low-level warfare, the region has suffered more than 6,500 deaths in the violence. The majority of the dead are civilians, killed by the secretive rebels or in raids by Thai security forces.
